Cart Whisper helps you review recorded carts and shopper activity. Its storefront widget shows a Cart ID shoppers can quote when they ask for help. Start by enabling the Cart Whisper Widgets app embed in the theme you use. You can keep the embed enabled even if you choose to hide the visible widget.

Before you start

Cart Whisper is installed on your store and you can open it from Apps in your Shopify admin.

You know which theme is live on your store, and whether that theme was built on another theme (for example, a customised copy of Dawn).

Step 1: Check your widget status

Open Cart Whisper. The home page has a Widget Status card.

Active means the app embed is already on. Go to Step 3.

Inactive means setup isn't finished yet. The card says: "To activate real-time cart insights and make use of the app, please complete the setup of the Cart Whisper App."

Step 2: Switch on the app embed

On the Widget Status card, click Enable Cart Widget. Your theme editor opens in a new tab with the app embeds panel showing.

Make sure Cart Whisper Widgets is on.

Click Save in the theme editor.

Go back to Cart Whisper and refresh the page. The card should now show Active.
You can reopen the same embed settings at any time from Settings → Cart Widget → Modify Cart Widget in Cart Whisper.

Step 3: Pick your theme

Under the Cart Whisper Widgets embed in the theme editor, open the embed's settings.

In Select your original theme name, choose the theme your store is based on. Cart Whisper has saved widget locations for a long list of popular Shopify themes, and choosing yours tells the widget where to sit.

Click Save.

If your theme isn't in the list, or it's heavily customised, see If the widget doesn't appear below.

Step 4: Choose a style and placement

In the same embed settings:

Choose a Cart widget style: option: Simple Widget, Modern Widget (the default) or Modern Widget with Form. The Widget Style Guide explains the differences.

Under Widget placement:, choose Above or Under. This is relative to the widget location for your theme.

Under Widget alignment:, choose Left, Center or Right.

Click Save.

Step 5: Check your storefront

Add a product to your cart in your online store and open the cart page (
/cart
). Unless you selected Hide Widget, check for the Cart ID widget. Its default header is Your Cart ID:. If your theme uses a slide-out cart drawer or a pop-up cart notification, open those too. The widget can appear there as well.

What happens next

Once the embed is on:

Check that your test cart appears in the Cart Whisper dashboard. Processing can take time; if it does not appear, check your setup and contact support rather than assuming there were no carts.

Review the exit-intent popup separately. Its default is on, but your saved settings control whether it appears. See Implementing the exit-intent popup.

You can open a tracked cart and create a Shopify draft order when the cart and your plan support it.

If the widget doesn't appear

Widget Status still says Inactive. Open the theme editor again, check Cart Whisper Widgets is on, and make sure you clicked Save on the theme you're editing. Changes to an unpublished theme won't show on your live store.

The embed is on, but you can't see the widget. Check Select your original theme name matches the theme your store is built on, then check Cart widget style: isn't set to Hide Widget.

Custom or unlisted themes. The embed has advanced location fields (Cart page widget location:, Sliding cart widget location:, Popup cart widget location:). These take CSS selectors from your theme. Only change them if you're comfortable inspecting your theme's code. Otherwise, contact us and we'll help.

Still stuck? Email support@cartwhisper.com with your store URL, your theme name, and a screenshot of your cart page. You can also book a free setup call from the Cart Whisper home page.

Getting started: switch on Cart Whisper in your theme
